Understanding How an Exhaust Manifold Works

Truck drivers depend on the engines. If their diesel engine malfunctions while they’re out on the road, their company will lose significant revenues. One way to prevent issues from happening is to teach drivers about how their engines work. The more drivers understand engine components, the better off they’ll be on the road. This guide to understanding how an exhaust manifold works will help educate those who want to know more about their engines.

The Fundamentals Behind It All

Diesel engines have sparkplugs that help start the ignition. Sparkplugs need heat to get up and running. A heated fuel/air mixture is created in the exhaust manifold. After the fuel is burned, the excess gas exits the engine. Exhaust manifolds are located on an engine’s cylinder. Some engines have multiple cylinders, meaning there are multiple exhaust manifolds. Essentially, these parts are the “lungs” of a diesel engine. These components must run properly for a truck to run smoothly.

Sensors and Tailpipes

Oxygen sensors help determine how much air is in the engine. These systems are crucial for creating the air/fuel mixture needed to ignite the sparkplugs. If this device determines there’s too much oxygen in the exhaust manifold, then the fuel injector will spray more gas to even things out. The same is true for the opposite situation. The mixture must be perfectly balanced in order to do its job. The tailpipe is another integral component of a diesel engine. Any extra gas that’s in the exhaust manifold exits through the tailpipe. If you notice an excessive leak under the tailpipe, contact a mechanic immediately.
